How to dress like a Mexican
So, at approximately 6 am one morning my step-daughter, Keagan, told me as I was walking out the door that she needed to “dress like a Mexican today”. I was a bit confused on this, and a bit afraid she might have the wrong idea in her head. Anyway, read on …
So, as I was driving to work, listening to the news on the radio about the illegal alien and other topics I decided I would write an email to the principal. Here is that email:
I am Keagan Hunt’s step-father, she attends 3rd grade at Cooper North. I am a bit concerned with a ‘holiday’ her music teacher is having the children participate in.
Keagan informed me this morning that see needed to “dress like a Mexican”. I found this to be an odd request from an eight year old, especially my step-daughter. When I inquired as to why she need to dress ‘like a Mexican”. She replied, “My music teacher told us to. We are celebrating a Mexican holiday today.”
I feel that asking the children to do this is incorrect. With all the different stand points on the illegal alien and border issues with our government, the last thing we need to do is have our children concerned with something like this. I feel strongly that our children should be taught to not hold any man or woman different for their race, color, creed, or religious belief. On that point, I also feel the schools should more than likely stop dragging the more political subjects into the classrooms. I feel they are there to teach our children the subjects of their specialty. English, Math, History, etc.
I was in school when the Pledge and prayer was taken away. I watch the news every night and see how this country, still the best in my eyes, has some serious issues on the race, color, creed, and religion topics. I think we need to have our teachers focus more on their trained specialty of teaching the subject they are to teach. I understand a teacher can be very influential in a child’s life, I had several who changed mine, yet I think we should stick to the program…not bring in anything that has to do with race, color, or creed. Religion is already a “no, no”.
If you or I made a comment in the wrong crowd about “dressing like a Mexican” it could have serious repercussions and could offend someone. I want my children to grow, learn, and become what ever they dream of being. I will assist them in any way I can to reach whatever that dream is. I do not, however, want to do damage control on something a teacher asks the children to do by having to sit an 8 year old down and discuss how we do not discriminate, we do respect, and other topics that should an 8 year old should not have to deal with. Nor do I want to do damage control if she makes a comment in public about “dressing like a Mexican”, with no ill intentions, but offends someone.
If we want to celebrate a holiday, lets keep it to the ones our country has designated. Our family has members and friends of many races, creeds, and religions in it, and we are proud to be called Americans. We want this family value kept strong in our children’s lives, but we want to instill those values, not the shcool.
I have no problem with Keagan attending the “holiday celebration”, but would like you to review the situation in the future.
I hope that this will bring a satisfying reply form you, and you understand my standing on the issue.
Thank you and God bless,

So in another email…since there has yet to be a reply to the first one…I asked the principal if she could inform me of “How to dress like a Mexican”? Informing her that I see Americans here with a Mexican heritage shopping at the same stores I do, having jobs like mine, some dressing worse, some better, some making little money, some making more than I can dream of, and some helping run this country.
All my friends, who are of Mexican heritage, dress like me for the most part…you know….Levi’s and a T-Shirt type dress.
Now don’t take this as me trying to set myself up for Saint-hood or anything. I have my prejudices, and my hard headed ways. Such as, since we are focusing on Mexican/Americans… You are in the United States of America…Your family or you did everything they could to get here…hopefully legally…so stop trying to fly your flags and sing your anthems. If you are that damn proud of the country you could not wait to get out of…GO BACK! It is still there, I promise. I can damn near see it from where I stand. I’ll pay the way if you need it – If on the other hand you are here and like this life style…then shut up and get with the groove the rest of us are in.
Everyone here in this beautiful country, except the Native American Indians…is from another country at some point in their history. We get up and go to work, most of us…pay our bills, vote, etc. etc. Most of our families that came here went through a process setup by the goverment…like learning English!?!?!!
GET WITH THE PROGRAM! LET’S DROP THE MINORITY CRAP ALL TOGETHER!
Everyone in this country should be equal across the board! “all mean are created equal…and endowed by their Creator with…” does anyone remember this…or did they do away with it while I was on vacation somewhere? We all live in this “Land of opportunity”, so lets focus on that.
This is the United States of America. People here are called Americans. The national language is English. It is a Democracy goverment.
I ask everyone that reads this to stand up when our schools, churches, goverments, etc. make mistakes and forget what this country is about and where it came from…the men and women that gave sweat, blood, tears, and lives to make it a place people want to be.
That’s my rant, and you can put money on the fact that I’ll stand up for it – what ever it takes. Principal….if you read this and I hope you do…then I bet Channel 11 Lubbock news would love this story. Those of you that disagree…send me your comments, email, or phone call. I’ll be glad to debate it with you.
