Hunt ’08 – not finished yet

Craig and I
Craig and I

Well, Craig and I went hunting this weekend. We had a good time fighting the wind. We had a good steady 25 mph wind with gusts up to 60 mph according to the weather report I got on my blackberry. I know it was dang sure blowing!

I missed on first morning because I am stupid and have not had time to site my rifle in since I got it last year at Christmas. It was bore sighted, so I hoped for the best. Took a shot from around 65-70 yards and hit underneath her. So it was time to site it in on the hay bales. We figured it was about 6-7 inches low and 3-4 inches left. Which is was not good.

So we got it dialed in and felt alot better about our evening hunt. We ate a sandwich and decided to get right back out there. We drove over to another spot we wanted to try out. Scouted out the area, made a little ground blind and decided to sit tight and watch the wind blow.

Around 4:30PM Craig spotted what we thought was a little doe. I could not get a shot off from where we were, so I started my stalk. LOL. Craig watched the deer with binoculars while I tried to get closer. I ended up within about 60 yards of it, on the other side of a brush line. I could see its head and decided that is where I would shoot. No meat there that I want.

I put the crosshairs on it and was squeezing the trigger when it put its head down. I got tired of waiting for it to lift its head – I was in an awkward position anyway …. so I shot it in the spine. Down it went – fast and clean.

We decided to go out the next morning to try and get a couple deer or hogs. Buster had let Craig use his .243 and we were ready. We woke to winds that were worse than they were the day before. We walked out setup and waited about an hour and a half for the sun to rise.

Sun came up – nothing. We waited. Nothing. Then we saw about 5-6 hogs running across the field about 400 yards out. We decided to try and catch up to them. No luck.

We called it a hunt and packed up. We hope to try it a couple times again before season closes. Hopefully Mario and Tyler can join in.

Anyway, Craig is good at skinning and cleaning – he got right in there.
