Some knowledge for you…about life
I had to take some mandatory training classes at work when I returned – safety related stuff. I was dreading the NORM Awareness (Naturally Occuring Radioactive Material) course, but found I was rather intrueged by the stuff they had to say. So here’s some knowledge for you.
To compare the risk associated with dying in a motor vehicle accident to that of dying in a motor vehicle accident to that of dying from a cancer associated with radiation exposure, a risk factor called “life expectancy lost” is often used.
The risk in terms of “life expectancy lost” from a single one-time dose of 1mRem is 2.1 minutes. Compared to some of the stuff more common below.
Smoking 1- 2 packs a day = 6.8 years lost
Overweight by 35% = 964 days lost
Motor Vehicle Accidents = 207 days lost
Lightning = 1.1 days lost
Parachuting = 25 days lost
Scuba Diving = 7 days lost
College Football = 0.6 days lost
High School Football = 0.3 days lost
Dog bites = 0.12 days lost
Single dose of 1mRem 2.1 minutes lost
Crazy!
