WordPress, Safari, FireFox and blogging
Yeah, most of my visitors won’t read this … but some will. It has to do with a little annoyance I found in Safari when using WordPress.
I have been using WordPress as my blog since 2004. Mainly on the Mac platform, so when I ventured to help a family member, who is new to blogging, I found this annoyance to be … well, and annoyance. LOL
It seems that when you are using IE with Windows you can view all the Quicktag buttons, and visual rich editor just fine. When using a Mac with Safari, you can’t.
Granted, I have lived with this just fine for sometime now. BUT, for some new bloggers who are not familiar with code and tags, it is easier to use the features of the rich editor. Plus, it just makes life easier and we all like those “easy buttons”. Don’t we?
Here are a few pictures of what I’m talking about:

As you can see, all the pretty ‘easy buttons’, or rich editor is missing in Safari. After some searching on the WordPress Codex, I found that they claim it is a bug in Safari. I hated to read that, since I am a big fan of everything Mac, but…
So, what can we do to fix this… well my fix was to use FireFox as my browser when posting to my blog form my Macs. I have to admitt, I do like the rich editor in WordPress, and its ease of use. So if you have not tried it…do so. Here is a few links to the WordPress Codex on the subject as well.
1.10 Why can’t I see the Quicktag buttons when using Apple’s Safari browser?
1.11 Why can’t I see the visual rich editor when using Apple’s Safari browser?
I guess, for my fellow Mac users out there, we’ll just have to wait or use FireFox if we want the rich editor. I tried some other editors mentioned in the WordPress codex, but they did not work either. I wish I was smart enough to fix Safari, but…
So, I am working on a revising a ‘Using WordPress for newbies’ document. This will be for friends and family that start using WordPress. It will be non-technical and full of pictures to go by. LOL So if you want to start a blog, give me a shout, email, etc. We’ll get you going.
Until then, happy blogging,
JC
Oh, and by the way, I used FireFox for this post. Yes, it made life a little easier on adding the pictures and links. 🙂
