She was born February 5, 1921, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Clyde and Marie Stevenoir Barnett. She was a 1939 graduate of the former Buffalo High School and she was formerly employed by Champion Spark Plug. She was a member of the Derwent United Methodist Church and a member of the Guernsey County Chapter #211 OES, Cambridge. She was a tremendous singer and a wonderful homemaker.

100_0565.jpgMy Grandma Mickey – The first memory that popped in my head after hearing that she passed was how she would take Jack (my brother) and I to get McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets when they first hit the scene. Not, sure why, but I can remember her telling us to dip them in the Sweet & Sour sauce “this makes them taste really good”. When ever I get Chicken Nuggets to this day…I still get the Sweet & Sour Sauce too.

I also remember when her and Grandpa would take us somewhere in the car. She loved to listen to the radio or her favorite tape and sing along. Later in life my brother and I started getting interested in music and would sing with her. I remember we were coming back from my Dad’s house to stay with them and my other Grandparents. We had a tape of George Strait in the deck and were all singing along. She thought is was funny how Jack and I could make “all the moans and pronunciations like he did. You sound just like him.” Made us feel good, probably hurt her ears, and drove my Grandpa crazy.

She would always cook big meals while we were there. She would always send us popcorn balls for Christmas…and we never had the heart to tell her we did not like them. Guess Jack and I did have a nice streak at one time. There were always the Christmas and birthday cards with the $25.00 checks.

I got to visit with her and Grandpa Buzz this past Christmas. She cooked wild rabbit (yes we are country folk), listened while I played my guitar and sang a few songs I had written, and smiled the entire time I think.

Even though it looks like I won’t get to attend the service in Ohio, and I did not get to attend Grandpa’s, I know it is OK. I will take time to remember them, and time will never steal those memories. Distance might have robbed me of visits, restricted my chance for new ones, and made us loose a bit of the closeness we had, but we always knew each other was there. I love you Grandma Mickey and I’ll miss you.

Please remember my family in your prayers.
