Dry drowning – and friends @ work

Well, I was rousted out of bed – after a long night of helping Mario and Leeann put down new ceramic tile in their bathroom – by a 4 year old wanting to tell me he used the potty by himself. Great! I thought. LOL I decided to read the news while he watched Mickey Mouse Club. I came across something I had never heard of before. Kind of weird – yet fatal.

Seems a 10-year-old boy from South Carolina drown this week while lying in his own bed. This has brought attention to the little known “dry drowning.” Dry drowning can happen when someone has forceful contact with the water, such as from high diving or a water slide. Or just from summer fun in a pool, or even from a bath.

Parents need to understand how dry drowning works. When water gets into the lungs, and it doesn’t have to be much, a child can asphyxiate. Lungs immersed in fluid are unable to take in oxygen from the air, but even with a small amount of water, Wikipedia says the “laryngospasm reflex essentially causes asphyxiation and neurogenic pulmonary edema.”

3,600 people drowned in 2005, according to the CDC. About 10 to 15 percent were dry drownings, which can occur up to 24 hours after water is breathed into the lungs.

Here is the story:

Anyway, we got Mario’s bathroom looking good. The job ended around 1AM. So Craig, Mario, and I are all pretty tired. Mario had to go to work this morning, so I bet he is dragging. I have Craig coming over today to help me put in some new fence posts. We are getting a new extension poured on our driveway Monday. So I have to get these posts planted.

Mario and Craig also helped me dig out the patio form in triple digit weather last weekend. I will get the concrete guys to pour this on Monday as well. THen I’ll get the crew together again to assist with the Pergola/Porch build. LOL See kids, this is how you stay of drugs, and out of trouble. Stay at home, find a project, fire up the grill and grab the tools.

Anyway, I’ll try to throw up some pics when all these things are finalized.
