Trying to write a song…
Just thought I would use this little spare time I found in my pocket to talk about something I love to do, and how I go about it. Song writing.
Yep, I write songs, mostly songs that no one has ever heard…but maybe one day someone will.
When I write a song, I don’t just sit down, grab the guitar and say OK here we go I am gonna write a song. Nope it usually comes to me from something that has happened to me or around me…something inspires me to write. I may think (yes I do that from time to time…even though it often gives me a headache) back to a moment in my life when something awesome or well..terrible happened, then use it for the context of the song.
Sometimes it is inspired from a message I heard at Church or maybe from scripture I have been studying. It could be anything, most often I have found that I just start singing or humming a tune in my head. I know scary, and probably the reason not many people have heard the songs. LOL
Another technique is sharing your song ideas with others. Sometimes the song needs to be read by another person with a fresh view. I have found that by doing this it helps get over that writers block or keeps your songs from all sounding the same. You will soon find you can have a great friendship just by getting together and writing. I know my friends and I enjoy working on each others material, because the song make take a complete turn from where I thought it was going.
I also try not to force a song. I have found when I try to complete a song..just for the fact that I can say it is completed, it ends weak. Don’t be afraid to let a song sit, wait until you can get a fresh look at it. Some writers take years to finish songs.
Try to pay attention to everything around you, kinda step back out of the action and look at what is happening around you. Read a book, study scripture, watch a movie…but pay attention to all of its surroundings as well.
Let the song come to you, share it, don’t be afraid to let it age, and have fun! I know this may just be some rambling, but I am gonna close with some links to sites that might help you more than I did or didn’t here.
