Kelsey 1st Place Brittle

Well, family is making some good tasting fame back home in the piney woods.

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – More than 300 East Texas youth entered their sweet treats in the Angelina County Bake Off Challenge Wednesay morning. Students were able to choose any recipe under the sun as long as it wasn’t a cake made straight from a box.

“It all has to be made completely from scratch,” said Vanessa Truett, Life Skills teacher at Huntington Middle School. “So it makes it a little bit more challenging, but it makes it an authentic food show.”

Truett has been attending the Angelina County Youth Fair for 14 years. She said it is the good food and seeing her students win that keep her coming back year after year.

Kelsey Due, a sixth grade student at Huntington Middle School, is in Truett’s Life Skills class. Truett helped Kelsey pick a recipe to enter in the senior level bake off challenge.

“I was thinking strudel at first, but then I got confused. So I went ahead and did peanut brittle,” said Due.

Kelsey’s peanut brittle took first place. She said she was nervous entering her brittle in a competition, so she asked her dad to do a preliminary taste test.

“My dad thought it was chewy and stuff, so we decided to let it harden up,” said Due.

Dad’s taste buds paid off as his little girl’s old fashioned candy will advance to the final round on Friday.
