Thanksgiving 2009

pb280017As I posted previously, we went down to the lake place – commonly known as “Palacio de George” for Thanksgiving. We wanted to have a good Thanksgiving with Debbie since her health is getting a little down. We had a great time and missed the rest of the family. Kaden kept saying “we have a happy family. I love you guys…but we’re missing someone.” We had to guess who…and as long as we guessed someone who was not there – we were correct. LOL

Jace really out did herself on the dinner cooking. She made more than enough – of course our plan was to live on it as the main meals for the entire time we were there – and we did. It tasted just as good each time too. LOL She was a regular Jace Lin, Betty Jo, Nancy Jo, Paula Dean, cooking machine. I mean a ham, a turkey, pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie/casserole, dressing, etc., etc. Man it was good.

I gave George a hard time the entire time. Especially when he would try to take a nap. LOL I would ring the doorbell when he would go to sleep or throw something at him. It was fun to watch him jerk awake and then look at me hatefully. Sometimes mumbling some sort of obscenity at me. Pure holiday fun.

George and I did go get my Federal permit for hunting. Then we slipped into Del Rio to see our girlfriends – not really I just like saying that – plus my wife will read this later. Del Rio was packed with a lot of people on Black Friday. I think half of Mexico was there doing their Christmas shopping. Border patrol was abundant as well. We went and scouted out each entrance to the different hunting areas and I logged them on my GPS for memory’s sake. Area 2 would have been real hard to find had the Ranger not given us such good directions.

pb280021I decided to hunt area 5 while there. I went out early, around 11:00AM Saturday morning. I wanted to have time to scout out the area a little before deciding on where to hunt. I enjoyed the trek across all the rock, black brush, mesquite, cactus, more rock, and other things that hurt. The sage was in bloom and looked awesome. The pictures in this post are from the initial scouting of the area. It was a really nice area just to hike. I did see a nice 6 point, but as hard as I tried, I could not get him to come within range of my bow. He looked good through the glasses though. Oh well, it is hunting – not shopping. (that’s my way of keeping my spirits up – LOL) I need to rig my boots with wool socks or something – so I can stalk a little easier in that terrain.

I found that walking around quietly was difficult out there. By the way, God has not answered my question just yet – I know He will – I asked Him why he poured all that broken rockpb280019 on top of all those other huge rocks…or what it was that broke them. Good night, I mean rock on top of rock that made sounds like a train wreck when you slipped on them. LOL It was kind of funny looking back now.

It was really nice to be out there in the middle of no where with just a bow and nothing better to do but kill an innocent animal only to cut it up and feed it to the family. Sorry, I had to do that – can’t have a bunch of people who think steaks are “made” at the grocery store hanging around the site.

Anyway, we had a great Thanksgiving and we’re thankful for so many things. I had time to truly reflect on all I was thankful for while out there in the woods…well I mean uhh brush. I can’t wait until we load up and go again – which I hope is soon. I really want to do some serious hunting out there this year so I can get to know the area better for next year, and the next, and the next, and the next, and the …
