Vacation day 3 – update

We have had a great time so far. The place we rented is what I would like to live in when retirement comes. Or before!

We have a lazy cold stream next to the house, deer walking around the 10 acres, and the Blanco river is about 100 yards away.  Oaks, scattered along the hills, hammocks hanging in a few of them make for a quick recharge.

Not many pictures at this point because we’ve been busy having fun and getting wet most of the time.

Kaden saw me catching fish yesterday on my fly rod, and told me that he and I had a fishing date for this morning. Sure enough he was up just before sunrise without having to be woke by his mom or myself.

We grabbed a couple rods, and off we went. Had a few bites, but not enough to keep him interested. Lol This was from the same boy who told me yesterday to have patients. Ha! About the only thing I can do patiently is hunt and fish. He was ready to go after about an hour and half.

We waded back upstream and walked to the house. Jace had breakfast going and that made him happy.

After breakfast I rigged up a couple poles with the smallest hooks I could find. This way, the little fish will get caught easier and make him happy.

Here are some pics and part of a funny email I sent out.

To all,
I hope this letter finds the crops high and plentiful. We continue our exploration of south central Texas outside Fort Blanco.

Well the family went to the forts market for local supplies and floatation devices. I’ve been to the fort, as I was in command of 30 men under direction of Jim Bowie.

Instead, I scouted the river. Yes, I know, dangerous country for a lone man, but it must be done.

I began by gathering the necessary supplies. Those were to include Snuff, sunglasses, hat, fly rod, fly equipment, water, and some foot wear good with water.

My expedition took me north from the homestead to the Blanco river. I entered the water in a wide shallow and then directed my travel down stream – south eastward at this junction.
The image above is a look back at my entry point.

This is some time later downstream. The fishing was good. Sunfish were plentiful. Only one bass was landed. Though many were seen.

Another image of the landscape. No injuns were spotted watering. My eyes were squinted by the sun, though sharp as a hawk in hopes of keeping my scalp.

The bottom here was a little difficult to travel. It was solid, but had many loose stones and a deep sand bed. Made footing treacherous. My superb skills of walking kept me upright. If not for the back injury I suffered at the last battle with Col. Travis, I am sure I would not have even noticed.

A small landing that shows signs of wildlife. I have marked this in my journal for a possible harvest of venison this winter.

The first catch of the day was not much, but got the hook wet as well as the wonderful feeling brought on by fishing.

I found the fish to start biting and drawing in my journal was too much. So, from here on I focused on fishing and exploration. That was until I was sent signal by smoke from the homestead that I was needed and must return.

As good fortune would have it, I made it back unscathed.

I plan to explore more of this area on the days to come. I will send letter of my findings and amusements.

Until then, fight the good fight.
